Dural Arteriovenous Fistula (DAVF)
- Background:
- Fed by meningeal arteries with drainage into dural venous sinuses, meningeal veins, or subarachnoid veins
- 15% of intracranial vascular malformations
- Clinical Presentation:
- Idiopathic or associated with trauma, infection, venous sinus thrombosis, or previous craniotomy
- Key Diagnostic Features:
-
Cortical venous drainage is a significant factor for aggressive behavior, as is venous ectasia.
- SWI is superior to conventional MR imaging in the detection of dilated veins associated with DAVF.
-
Presence of SWI hyperintensity within the venous structure can be a useful indicator of retrograde leptomeningeal venous drainage in patients with DAVF.
