Society President Biographies

American Society of Neuroradiology: President David M. Yousem, MD, MBA

Dr. David M. Yousem is Professor of Radiology, Director of Neuroradiology, and Vice Chair for Program Development at Johns Hopkins University. Our current ASNR president, he has assumed this position at a critical time in defining our society's position with respect to its type and number of members. As such, some of his goals for his 1-year tenure include: increasing the number of members, improving services to members by enhancing our on-line presence (CME credits, SAMs, PQI, and neuroradiology curriculum), broadening our support for fellows and PhDs, and reducing the membership and annual meeting fees. As a testament to his enthusiasm and boundless energy, several of these goals have already been accomplished in record time.

Dr. Yousem obtained his MD from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and completed his radiology and neuroradiology training at Johns Hopkins University and the University of Pennsylvania, respectively. He also obtained an MBA from Johns Hopkins University. He has been a part of more than 20 government or industry-funded research endeavors. His curriculum vitae lists nearly 200 invited lectures and 200 publications, mostly in the area of head and neck imaging. He is the author or co-author of 9 books including the bestselling Neuroradiology: The Requisites now in its second edition. Of the 50 fellows he has trained, more than half remain in academic environments. He has served on more than 10 ASNR and 9 ASHNR committees. He is a Past President of the Eastern Neuroradiological Society and past Treasurer and Vice President of ASNR. In these rapidly changing and uncertain times, ASNR is privileged to have such a distinguished and hard-working individual at its helm.

American Society of Head and Neck Radiology: President H. Ric Harnsberger, MD

Dr. H. Ric Harnsberger is Professor of Radiology and R.C. Willey Chair in Neuroradiology in the University of Utah School Of Medicine. He is an internationally recognized expert in head and neck imaging who has published more than 250 articles and 7 books in this area during a 25-year academic career. A graduate of UCLA Medical School, Dr. Harnsberger did his radiology residency at the University of Utah School of Medicine in Salt Lake City. Fellowships in body imaging, head and neck imaging, and neuroradiology followed. His major area of research interest is centered on the use of high-resolution T2 imaging of diseases of the inner ear and cerebellopontine angle. In 2000, Dr. Harnsberger received the RSNA Roentgen Centennial Fellow Award for his proposal entitled: Radiologic Digital Teaching Files Data Model. Dr. Harnsberger is also Chairman and CEO of Amirsys, Inc, in Salt Lake City, a medical electronic decision support company. In 2005, Amirsys won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year award in medical technology.

American Society of Spine Radiology: President Erin Simon Schwartz, MD

Dr. Simon Schwartz is Associate Professor of Radiology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She is a nationally known expert in pediatric and spine imaging. In the last 3 years she has published more than 60 articles and abstracts. She has a BS in Occupational Therapy from Tufts University and obtained her MD from the Medical College of Virginia. At the University of Maryland, she completed her diagnostic radiology residency and then went on as a fellow in neuroradiology at the University of California in San Francisco. She is a member of the editorial boards of AJNR, Pediatric Radiology, and Applied Radiology. In 2006, ASNR recognized her with the NERF Scholar award for her project: A Comprehensive Assessment of Fetal Physiologic Well-Being. She is member of several ASNR committees and has been Treasurer and Secretary of ASSR and the Eastern Neuroradiological Society.

American Society of Interventional Neuroradiology: President Gary M. Nesbit, MD

Dr. Nesbit is Associate Professor of Radiology and Fellowship Director for Endovascular Surgical Neuroradiology at the Dotter Institute of the Oregon Health and Science University. His curriculum vitae lists 56 peer-reviewed articles, 17 chapters, nearly 70 abstracts, and 2 books. He is listed as a co-investigator in 10 federally-funded and 22 industry-funded grants in addition to serving as a consultant on many others. He obtained his MD from the University of Minnesota, did his radiology residency and neuroradiology fellowship at the Mayo Clinic, and completed his neurointerventional training at his current location. He is on several ASNR committees and also has served as Secretary/Treasurer, Vice President, and President for the Western Neuroradiological Society. Until 2006, he was Chief of the Neuroradiology Section at Oregon, where he is currently Chair of the MR imaging research committee.

American Society of Functional Neuroradiology: President Jeffrey R. Petrella, MD

Dr. Petrella is Associate Professor of Radiology and Director of the Alzheimer Disease Imaging Research Laboratory at Duke University. He is an author in 41 articles, 5 book chapters, and 1 book. He has served as a consultant in several panels for the National Institute of Aging with special expertise on dementias and imaging of the aging brain. He is the primary investigator in an NIA-funded research project and has received 3 grants from the Radiological Society of North America. Dr. Petrella obtained his MD from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey, completed his radiology residency at St. Vincent's Hospital in New York City, and was a fellow in neuroradiology at the University of Pennsylvania. After spending 3 years at the National Institutes of Health, he moved to North Carolina. He previously served as Secretary and Vice President for the ASFNR.

American Society of Pediatric Neuroradiology: President Jill Hunter, MD

Dr. Hunter is Associate Professor of Radiology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and Chief of Pediatric Neuroradiology at the Texas Children's Hospital, also in Houston. She completed her neuroradiology training at Queen's Square, Moorfield's Eye Hospital, and Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London before taking a position as Instructor in Radiology at Harvard and Neuroradiologist at the Massachusetts General Hospital in 1992. She established her interest in pediatric neuroradiology while working at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (1993–2001). After her tenure there, she moved to Houston. Her main research interest is related to pediatric traumatic brain injury. Other research interests include cerebral blood flow and pediatric stroke, MR spectroscopy and metabolic disorders, neuroimmunology, neurocardiology, and neurogenetics. She is a Past President of the Eastern Neuroradiological Society.
