Anton N. Hasso, President of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology

Anton (Tony) N. Hasso has been installed as the current president of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology. Dr. Hasso received his BSc degree from La Sierra University and his MD from Loma Linda University School of Medicine in California. After an internship at the University of Southern California Medical Center, a radiology residency at the White Memorial Medical Center in Los Angeles, and a cardiovascular radiology fellowship at Loma Linda University, he became a National Institute of Neurologic Diseases and Stroke Special Fellow in Neuroradiology at the University of California Los Angeles Center for Health Sciences. In 1973, he served a postdoctoral fellowship in orbital and ear-nose-throat radiology at the Foundation A. De Rothschild in Paris, France. From 1984 to 1996, he was the director of neuroradiology at the Loma Linda University School of Medicine, and held the titles of professor of radiology and professor of otolaryngology/head and neck surgery. In 1996, he accepted the appointment of professor and chairman of the Department of Radiological Sciences at the University of California, Irvine, College of Medicine. There he also holds a joint appointment as professor of the Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.

Tony is an expert on clinical imaging of the brain and spine, and an investigator on applications of CT and MR imaging in disorders of the head and neck. His superb lectures on these topics have been given numerous times at national and international courses, seminars, and scientific society meetings. He is also an expert in the imaging of the temporal bone. He is the author or coauthor of four books and over 80 articles in refereed scientific journals. He has contributed 28 chapters to textbooks in the fields of neuroradiology, head and neck radiology, and MR imaging. Dr. Hasso is a reviewer and a member of the editorial boards of seven scientific journals in his specialty.

Tony has had a major impact on many societies and the specialties of radiology, neuroradiology, and head and neck radiology. He has held the following titles: president of the American Society of Neuroradiology, president of the Western Neuroradiological Society and the Inland Radiological Society, and founding member of the World Federation of Neuroradiological Societies and its first treasurer. Dr. Hasso is a member of the Executive Council of the American Roentgen Ray Society and served as president of the California Radiological Society. Besides his current role as president of the American Society of Head and Neck Radiology, Tony serves as a member of the Diagnostic Imaging Study Section, Center for Scientific Review, National Institutes of Health, and on the Diagnostic Radiology Residency Review Committee as a representative of the Council of Medical Education of the American Medical Association. He is a guest examiner in neuroradiology on the Oral Boards of the American Board of Radiology and for the certificate of added qualifications in neuroradiology subspecialty boards.

Tony was born in Baghdad, Iraq, and has lived in California since 1957. His better half (a point I am sure Tony would underscore) is Peggy Fritche, MD. They have shared a life full with service to their professions. They live in Redlands, California near the campus of Loma Linda, where they first met. Peggy leads an equally hectic professional life, balancing her private practice in radiology with her role on the board of directors of the Radiological Society of North America. They have two grown sons, and enjoy travelling, outdoor sports, and an active social life. A day on the ski slopes with the Hassos is one to remember—if you can keep up with them! This couple is a joy to know, full of laughs and insights. We are all fortunate that they have chosen to be involved in radiology and give so much of their time to better our profession. The ASHNR is in good hands with Anton Hasso as its leader.
