Frequently Asked Questions about Institutional Subscriptions

FAQ for institutional end users or library patrons.

My institution has a subscription to AJNR, but I'm not able to see the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening?

When this happens, the IP address for your machine is not being recognized by our computer. This failure is caused by one of three things:

  • Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated.
  • The institutional administrator did not enter in all needed IP addresses for your institution.
  • The institutional administrator did not properly list subnets that are routed through a proxy server.

What should I do?

  1. Talk to your librarian and let them know you are having trouble.
  2. If your librarian is unable to assist you, please have them contact the AJNR office for assistance.

Who is an institutional administrator?

An institutional administrator is the person in charge of maintaining IP addresses and institutional information for AJNR. Administrators are afforded access via username and password for purposes of providing such maintenance.

My library subscribes to the AJNR, and I can't get access to it online. Why?

Your institution may not have yet activated its institutional subscription to AJNR. Notify your librarian that you would like to access AJNR from a computer at your institution, and encourage your librarian to activate the online subscription.

Who from my institution can access AJNR Online?

Any computer in the institution may be identified via IP address and provided access to the website. Basic and Extended subscriptions are no longer applied based on the number of organizational sites but upon the amount of usage that emanates from an institution's IP addresses. Institutions considered heavy users will be prompted to renew at the Extended subscription rate.

Can I access AJNR when I am away from the institution IP range?

Yes, CASA (Campus Activated Subscriber Access) is an authentication enhancement that improves the authentication for off-campus users of Google Scholar.  CASA is free and is automatically enabled for AJNR.

How does it work?

When a user is on-campus, they often connect to a university network. When connected, if they visit Google Scholar, Google automatically creates an affiliation between that user and their institution.  This affiliation allows Google Scholar to record that the user has subscription privileges granted by that institution. With Google CASA, this same seamless authentication follows the user when they take their device to any off-campus location. Once the affiliation is created, it grants them immediate access to the articles and journals that their institution subscribes to even when the user is off campus.

What subscription packages are available?

Please see our Rates and Information page for a list of subscription options.

How can I tell if my institution has subscribed to AJNR?

If your institution has a subscription, you will automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full-text searching, full-text display, and PDFs. You will also see text at the the top of the page confirming that you are signed in as part of an institution.

If your institution has not subscribed and you would still like to access the AJNR, you may choose to sign up for an individual subscription.
